Born Alfred Frank Abbott during the June quarter 1896 in the Maldon R.D. ref: 4a/586, the son of Frank Clement & Grace Abbott (nee Lucking). His mother died at Maldon in 1912, aged: 38. His father must have moved to Sale sometime after his son's enlistment (his death perhaps?) and married Margaret Boyd at St. George's P.C., Hulme on the 18th October 1919. They resided at Dunstan House, Dane Road, Sale. 1901 Census - 30 High Street, Maldon, Essex. Son (Listed as Alfred F. Abbott) - aged: 4 - born: Maldon, Essex. Head of household - Frank C. Abbott - Married - aged: 33 - occ: Grocer's Assistant - born: Liverpool. Also - Grace Abbott - Wife - aged: 28 - born: Maldon. Plus 1 younger sister, 3 boarders and 2 domestic servants.. 1911 Census - 54 Cross Road, Maldon, Essex (7 roomed house). Son - aged: 14 - occ: On Poultry Farm - born: Maldon, Essex.Head of household - Frank Abbott - aged: 42 - occ: Grocer's Assistant - born: Liverpool. Also - Grace Abbott - Wife - aged: 37 - born: Maldon, Essex. Plus 1 younger sister. MIC - Drafted to France on the 6th November 1914. The 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment served in the 118th Brigade, 39th Division. The Regiment arrived on the Somme at Grouches on the 24th August 1916. They relieved the 16th Rifle Brigade in the left sub section 'Y' Ravine on the 19th September, where Alfred was fatally wounded. Awarded the 14 Star, plus the BWM & VM. French M.I. - "In a heroes grave he's laid to rest, one of England's very best". Commemorated on the family grave in Sale (Brooklands) Cemetery. |
