Born during the June quarter 1870 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/186, the son of William & Alice Axon (nee Warrington). 1871 Census - No Trace. 1881 Census - Lloyd St, Altrincham. Son - aged 10 - Scholar - born: Altrincham. Head of household - William Axon - Married - aged: 35 - occ: journeyman Shoemaker - born: Altrincham. Also - Alice Axon - Wife - aged 32 - born: Altrincham. Plus the following siblings:- William - aged 14 - Minnie - aged 7 - Annie - aged 4; and Fred - aged 2. WO96 / 45 / 430 - First enlisted into the 4th Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment No. 2610 on the 24th June 1890 at Ashton under Lyne. Aged: 18 years, 8 months Discharged 16th March 1891. Height: 5 feet, 5½ inches - Weight: 116 lb. Complexion: Fresh - Eyes: Blue - Hair: Brown - Church of England. "J A" tattoo on right forearm and "J Axon" tattoo on left forearm 1891 Census - No Trace. He had only just been discharged from the 4th Battalion, Royal Lancashire Regiment. According to his WO363 record, he married Mary Ann Nicholas at St. Mary's P.C. Moss Side on the 5th August 1891. However, all the BMD records state that they married during the September quarter 1895 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/1129. Their eldest son - James William Axon was born in 1892. 1901 census - Florence Street, Ashton-upon-Mersey, Head - Married - aged: 29 - occ: Flagger with the Stretford D.C. His wife Mary A. Axon - aged 32 - born: Plus their 4 children:- Agnes - aged 13 - James - aged 9 - Annie - aged 3 - and Alfred - aged 1, all born at Altrincham. 1911 Census - 12 Florence Street Ashton-upon-Mersey. Herad - Married - aged: 39 - occ: Stonemason - born: Altrincham. Also - Mary Ann Axon - Wife - aged: 42 - born: Herefordshire. Plus 6 children - Agnes, now Agnes Thoms - married to George Thoms - aged: 23 - James William - aged: 19 - Annie, aged: 13 - Alfred, aged: 11 - Lucy, aged: 6 - Harold, aged: 3. They had 6 children, all of whom surived by 1911. Their eldest son - James William died later in 1911, aged: 19. SDGW lists his number as 49207. Formerly 12593 - Cheshire Rgt. Finished as 49207 - Labour Corps. WO 363 - Residing at 12 Florence Street, Ashton upon Mersey, he enlisted into the 3rd Cheshire Regiment at Altrincham on the 31st August 1914 - No. 11013. He had previously served in the 4th Battalion, Royal Lancashire Regiment. Aged: 42 years, 292 days, employed as a Stonemason, born in the Parish of St. John, Altrincham. Height: 5 feet, 5½ inches - Weight: 137 lb - Expanded chest: 36 inches with a 2 inch expansion. Discharged from the Army on the 28th October 1914 as being unfit for service on medical grounds. Dependent chldren listed - Agnes, born: 14/05/1889. Annie, born: 28/04/1897. Alfred, born: 24/02/1900. Harold, born: 03/05/1907. His father was a shoemaker, born at Hale in 1845, died Altrincham 1907. His mother was born at Altrincham c1847 and died in 1930. According to Ian Axon, they had 11 children in all ???. Commemorated on the family gravestone in St. Martin's Ref: 1.789, which states that he was KinA. His wife Mary died on 08/02/1941 aged 72. His daughter continued to place his name in the RoH of the local newspaper, but by September 1941 she was living at Holmstead, Glebelands Rd, AoM. His eldest brother William Axon and a nephew were also killed on active service. He left a widow and 4 children, one of whom was married. Death reported in the 18/09/1917 edition of the Sale & Stretford Guardian. The sister in charge of him informed the family that he had died in a Casualty Clearing Station hospital at the front. Re-enlisted in July 1915 (wrong) and drafted to the front March 1917. Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918, which states that he was serving with the Cheshire Rgt's Labour Bn. Belgian M.I. - "At rest with the Lord". Commemorated on both St. Martin's & St. Mary's Memorials, Ashton upon Mersey. |
