Born Fred Helliwell Birkinshaw during the December 1886 quarter in the
Toxteth Park R.D. -  ref: 8b/196a the son of Thomas & Janette Birkinshaw
(nee Fenton).

1891 Census - 12 Varthen Street, Everton, West Derby, Lancashire.   Son -
(Fred Hellewell) - aged: 4 - born: England.    Head of household - Tom
Birkinshaw - Married - aged: 30 - occ: Railway Engine Fireman - born:
England.   Also Janet Birkinshaw - Wife - aged: 24 - born: England.   Plus
2 younger daughters.

1901 Census - 14 Burton Street, Gorton, Manchester.    Son - (Fred
Hellewell) - aged: 14 - occ: Apprentice Engine Fitter - born: Liverpool.  
Head of household - Tom Birkinshaw - Married - aged: 39 - occ: Stationary
Engine Man - born: Yorkshire.   Also Janet H. Birkinshaw - Wife - aged: 35
- born: Ireland.   Plus 3 younger siblings.

As Fred Hellewell, he married Martha Williamson during the September
quarter 1905 in the Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/457.

1911 Census - 108 Midland Road, Cotteridge, Kings Norton, Worcestershire.  
Head of household - (Fred Helliwell) - Married - aged: 26 - occ: Inspector
at Motor Car Works - born: Lancashire.    Also - Martha Birkinshaw - Wife -
aged: 26 - born: Sale.  Plus their two chldren - Jeanet (5) and Alan (3).

He was a Musician and played the Euhonium for the old 3rd Cheshire
Volunteers Military Band.

The 02/07/1915 edition of the local newspaper reports that his wife had
received a letter from him, in which he states that they landed on the 4th
June and that they were having a rough time of it.

The 14/09/1915 edition of the Altrincham Guardian reported that he was
missing.  The 30/06/1916 edition of the newspaper reports confirmation of
his death from previously being missing.

He left a widow and three young children.  They resided at 3 Wharf Road,
Sale.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1917, which states
that he was aged 19 (don't think so!).
