Flying with 408 (Goose) Sqn he took off  in a Halifax Mk VII Bomber No.
NP810 EQ-H from RAf  Linton on Ouse at 15.20 hrs for a bombing raid on an
Oil refinery at Castrop-Rauxel.  Herbert was the only RAF man on board,
which was piloted by Flt.Lt.  A.E. Reeves RCAF.    The aircraft was shot
down by Hauptmann Fritz Lau of the 4./NJG 1, who had taken off from
Düsseldorf airfield in Bf 110 G-4 G9+AM.  Herbert's a/c crashed at a farm
on the outskirts of Hochdahl - Trills, at Erkrath, Nordrhein-Westfalen,
Germany.     Reeves and one other RCAF crew member were taken prisoner, the
other 5 crew members were all killed.
