swimmer.

Tried to join the RAF, but when they checked his papers, he was underage.  
 Accepted on his 18th birthday in October 1940.

Wireless Operator/Air Gunner.

Local newspaper reported an earlier story about how his aircraft had
crashed into the sea with a crew of 5 aboard.    Although only the tail was
above the water, he managed to release the life raft and 4 of them managed
to get aboard - the fifth one died in the cold.    They tried to paddle to
the shore using their hands, without success.   They then split the life
raft's wooden floorboard into 4 to make paddles.   After 5 hours of
paddling, they made it ashore.

Killed in a flying accident at a position 1½ miles S.W. of Llyn Dulyn,
Caerham Nant, Conway, North Wales.    Buried 21/01/1943 - Burial No.
11,571.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Hale Cem.

His father, Thomas was a Post Office Sorting Clerk at Altrincham Post
Office and he died 18/12/1913 aged 53 years, his mother, Emma died
31/10/1940.
