Born during the June quarter 1914 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/1815, the
eldest son of Joseph William Henry & Alice Handley (nee Williamson).

Attended Bradbury Central School.    Employed as an Agent for the Pearl
Assurance Co.

Married - Marjorie Agnes Bradley during the September quarter 1939 in the
Bucklow R.D. - ref: 8a/950.  They resided at "Kenzie", 9 Bedford Drive,
Timperley.

Joined the Army in 1940 and had been in the RAC for 18 months, fighting
with the 1st Canadian Infantry on the Adolf Hitler Line.

The wartime 7th Battalion was converted to armour (142 Regiment Royal
Armoured Corps equipped with Churchill Tanks) and fought with distinction
in North Africa and Italy still wearing The Suffolk Regiment badge in their
black berets.  The Regiment saw heavy fighting in both the early stages of
the battle for Tunis and its final capture.  Its tanks played an important
role in the clearing of Tunisia. Later in Italy, it helped break through
the Adolf Hitler Line based on Cassino and subsequently the Gothic Line. In
the first named, it worked closely with Canadian troops and was asked to
wear the Canadian Maple Leaf badge in recognition of their support.

He was killed whilst working on his tank under fire.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone (brother's) in Christchurch
Churchyard, Timperley.

Listed in the RoH in the 23rd & 30th June 1944 edition of local newspaper.

Had a son called Michael John Handley.
