Born on the 27th October 1897, the birth being registered during the
December quarter 1897 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/186, the youngest
son of John & Alice Jane Gilchrist (nee Lee).

household - John Gilchrist - Married - aged: 40 - occ: Plumber & Gas Fitter

Manchester.    Plus 2 elder siblings and 1 boarder.

1911 Census - 7 Hope Road, Sale.   Son - aged: 13 - Scholar - born: Sale.

House Plumber - born: Salford.   Also - Alice Gilchrist - Wife - aged: 50 -

Line, Albert Square, Manchester.

WO363 - He attested at Preston on the 31st May 1916 and was mobilised on
the 15th September 1916.   He resided at 7 Hope Road, Sale and was aged; 18
years 7 months.  His occupation recorded as a Junior Assistant.  He was 5
feet 6 inches in height and weighed 110 lb.   His chest expansion was 32 -
34 1/2 inches, with Fair physical development.  He embarked at Folkeston on
the 7th January 1917, landing at Calais the same day.

Formerly 160648 Royal Field Artillery.

Killed together with another comrade when a shell bust near them.

Death reported in the 26/10/1917 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918, which states
that he was a Signaller.

Commemorated on the family gravestone in Sale Cemetery.  His father - John
Gilchrist died on the 26th May 1924, aged: 63 years and his mother - Alice
Jane Gilchrist died on the 6th August 1932, aged: 71 years.

CWGC - Son of John & Alice Jane Gilchrist.

It would appear that John was a Sale man, with little connection to
Altrincham.   The reason he is included under Altrincham is that SDGW
states that he enlisted at Altrincham, but there are many errors in SDGW.
