son of William John & Mary Tyeth Hartley (nee Hart).

1891 Census - "Blythwood", Beech Hill Estate, next to Hadley Wood, Enfield,
London.   Son - aged: 3 - born: Edmonton, London.   Head of household -
William J, Hartley - Married - aged: 34 - occ: Tea Dealer (Grocer) - born:
Dorchester Dorset.  Also - Mary T. Hartley - Wife - aged: 31 - born:
Hackney, Middlesex.   Plus - 4 siblings - and 3 domestic servants.

1901 Census - Bedford School, 18 Rothsay Place, Bedford.   Scholar - aged:
13 - born: Enfield.  His elder brother was also attending the School.  His
parents were visiting William & Emily Hartridge at Walpole House, Yarmouth
Road, Thorpe next Norwich.

main school building was built in 1891.

MIC - Originally a Lance Corpora No. 1766 serving in the 9th Bn. Middlesex
Rgt, later 2nd Lt. 7th Middlesex Rgt.  No date given as to when he went to
France.  His father's address was given as - 15 Queen Street, Cheapside,
London. E.C.4.  Only awarded the BWM & the VM indicating that he did not go
to France until at least 1916.

It would appear that he was a Teacher at Wadham House school ???
