Trafford

Born during the Sep Qtr 1897 in the Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/710,
the eldest son of William & Ellen Titterington (nee Gray).

1901 Census - 37, Watts Street, Levenshulme, Manchester.    Son - aged: 3 -
born: Manchester.  Father's occ: Plater & Polisher.

1911 Census - 9 Pickford St Old Trafford.    Son - aged: 13 - Scholar -
born: Old Trafford.    Father's oc: Electro Plater.

20th (Service) Battalion (5th City Pals).    Formed in Manchester on 8
November 1914 by the Lord Mayor and City and moved to Morecambe.
April 1915 : moved to Grantham and placed under command of 91st Brigade in
30th Division. Moved to Larkhill in September 1915.   November 1915 :
landed at Boulogne.    20 December 1915 : Brigade transferred to 7th
Division, 22nd Brigade.

1st Day of Somme -  Mametz, Pommiers Redoubt.   Flanking attack on
Fricourt.  Quickly over German lines but then took heavy casualties from
heavy machine gun.

14th July - Moved forward to The Snout and support lnes along south-western
edge of Bazentine-le-Petit Wood Battalion relieved on the 21st July -
sustained 169 casualties during this advance.

He may have been one of these casualties who was then taken back along the
railway to the 36 Casualty Clearing Station at Heilly Mericourt-l'Abbe
where he died of his wounds some days later.
