Flying with 619 Squadron the crew took off at 23.07 hrs from RAF Dunholme
Lodge in a Lancaster Mk I Bomber - No. LL977 PG-H for a bombing mission to
Wesseling.   Outbound they were hit by Flak at 17,000 feet in the vicinity
of Aachen.   The a/c exploded in mid-air and the pilot - Flight Lieutenant
D.C. Saunder was thrown out of his cockpit and survived to be taken
prisoner.  The other crew members all perished in the crash.

The other crew members were - Sergeant C.W. Goodwin - Flight Sergeant J.E.
Whittome - Sergeant C.C. Flewelling RCAF - Sergeant J.O. Johnston - Warrant
Officer C.H. Sheridan - Sergeant J.L. Halpin.

619 Squadron lost 7 Lancasters on the Wesseling raid = 42 men.   Altogether
a total of 38 aircraft were lost on this raid.
