Born Bucklow R.D. - Sep Qtr 1899 - ref: 8a/198. Registered as Clifford
HEMBROUGH (not Hemborough).

H.M.S. "Strongbow" was an 'R' class destroyer built in 1916. On the
17/10/17 together with H.M.S. "Mary Rose" and two trawlers she was
escorting a convoy of twelve merchant ships form Norway to Lerwick in the
Shetlands. When just 75 miles off Lerwick, at 06.00hrs "Strongbow" was
surprised by the appearance of the German minelaying cruisers "Brummer" and
" Bremse" which had broken through the patrols and were now 'on the loose'.
The German ships were armed with 5.9" guns and had a top speed of 34
knots. "Strongbow" was certainly no match for them but could not outrun
them. Before she could even get within firing range of the German ships
she was hit by a shell that burst in her engine room totally disabling her.
She was then abandoned and sank at 07.30hrs. There were only 5 survivors
and 83 crew were lost.
