Born at Eccles on the 13th July 1891, the son of
John Clement & Elizabeth Ann Rutter, Coton House,
Queens Road, Ashton on Mersey.   John Clement
Rutter was the son of John L. & Harriett E.
Rutter.  In 1871 J.L.R. was a Solicitor at Penn,
Staffordshire.

born: Eccles, Lancashire.

Attended Sale High School.  Joined the
Territorials c1903.  He was probably recalled to
duty in August 1914 and his MIC states that he was
drafted to (2b) Gallipoli on the 5th May 1915.

"British Regiments at Gallipoli" states that the
Battalion served with the 125th Brigade, 42nd
(East Lancashire) Division.   At 09.30 hrs on the
3rd May 1915 they sailed on the SS Derflinger, a
captured German vessel which had only arrived in
Alexandria a few hours before carrying over 500
casualties from the fighting.  They disembarked at
Helles Gallipoli at 16.00 hrs on the 6th May and
moved to bivouacs on the cliffs above "W" Beach. 
Each man carried 200 rounds of ammunition, two
days supply of Iron Rations, together with the
usual picks and shovels.   No baggage, blankets or
stores were allowed.   At 19.00 hrs on the 7th
May, they moved forward to a position west of
Krithia Bridge.   At 20.30 hrs on the 8th May,
they moved up the Krithia Road into support
positions.and relieved the 4th Battalion,
Worcestershire Regiment in the firing line in the
Krithia Nullah Sector on the 11th.    They were
relieved on the 21st and went back to the reserve
lines.  On the 25th May they relieved the 1/5th
Battalion East Lancashire Regiment in the firing
line and, together with the 1/5th Battalion,
Manchester Regiment they advanced the firing line
by some 50 - 200 yards.   [the S.S. Derfflinger
was built in1908 and seized by Britain in 1914 and
renamed the S.S. Huntsgreen]

Memorial Plaque in his name on wall of Parr's
Bank, School Road, Sale (later the National
Westminster Bank).   This Bank has since moved to
the corner of School Road and Springfield Road,
the original Parr's Bank has now been converted
into the "Bank at Sale" Public House.  The
Memorial Plaque went missing during the move along
School Road.  After many years of trying to trace
it, it was finally found in 2009.   The Plaque has
now been rightfully mounted in the new building.

Claude was a member of Sale RUFC and was a member
of the Sale & District Rifle Club.  He was a
Lieutenant in the St.Mary's P.C. Lads Brigade.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in
St. Catherine's, Barton on Irwell. Ref: 7l4.    
His father, John Clement died 18/03/1899 aged 51
years and his mother Elizabeth Ann died 16/08/1922
aged 67 years.

During WW1 two of his sisters Ellen Geraldine Lilian Rutter who in 1911 was
employed as a Nurse at the Austin Street Hospital Bethnal Green, London and
Ethel Theodora Christina Rutter, who in 1912 was a Student Nurse at the
Royall Infirmary, Gloucester, served with the Queen Alexandra's Imperial
Medical Nursing Reserve and four of his brothers were also in the forces. 
An older brother, Clement Henry Edward Rutter, served with the London
Volunteers Regiment and managed to survive the war as did another brother
George Leopold Norman Rutter who was also serving with the Manchester
Regiment and invalided home during the Gallipoli fighting.  Frederick
William Gabert Rutter was killed in action on 27th August 1915 at Gallipoli
during the Battle for Sulva Bay.  The youngest brother, Geoffrey Ronald
Morton Rutter served with the Durham Light Infantry and was killed in
action on 27th May 1918 whilst taking part in the Second Battle of the
Marne, France.
