Born at Liverpool in 1890, the son of Walter & Elizabeth Griffin.

1891 Census - 24 Granville Street, Moss Side, Manchester.    Son - aged: 1
- born: Liverpool.    Head of household - Walter Griffin - Married - aged:
31 - occ: Manager Clothing - born: Bristol, Somerset.   Also Elizabeth
Griffin - Wife - aged; 33 - born: Manchester.   Plus 5 siblings.

His mother died during the December quarter 1894 in the Liverpool R.D. -
ref: 8b/67 - aged: 42.    No trace of his subsequent marriage to Edith.

1901 Census - 227 Claremont Road, Moss Side, Manchester.    Step-son -
aged: 11 - born: Liverpool.   Head of household - Edith Griffin - Married -
aged: 26 - born: United States of America.   Plus 8 siblings and 2 half
siblings.   His father was absent that night but listed as a Turf
Commission Agent.

1911 Census - 21 St. Anne's Road, West, St. Anne's on Sea, Lancashire.   
Boarder - aged: 21 - occ: House Painter - born: Liverpool.   Boarding with
Henry & Agnes Crowe and family.   No trace on his father.

St. Anne's on Sea was correct at the time of his enlistment, but his father
(Walter) had, by the time of his son's death, moved to Ashton upon Mersey
and was the Manager of the Palace Theatre/Cinema on Ashton Lane (now
demolished), situated opposite York Road.   Date of Birth 26/05/1889.

At 6.0pm on the 15th June 1915 the Bn launched an attack on the German
trenches, the objective being to take the area between Chappelle St. Roch
and the Rue d'Ouvert in the direction of Violaines. They met a murderous
barrage of rifle and machine gun fire.   Total casualties that day were
431, of which 4 officers and 19 other ranks were killed, 6 officers and 255
other ranks injured and 2 officers and 145 other ranks missing missing -
one of which was William.
