An excellant footballer, he played football for Bury F.C. and on occasions,
for Altrincham F.C.  He was also a member of the Bowdon Vale Cricket Club.

He was reported in the local newspaper as being a Supply Assistant with the
Fleet Air Arm.

H.M.S. St. Germain was built in 1924 and operating under the Saint Line
Ltd., and managed by Mitchell, Cotts & Co. Ltd., Winchester House, Old
Broad St, London. EC2.  Her gross tonnage was 1,044 tons.  Whilst
travelling in convoy 'HG' she was torpedoed by U-137 and sunk near Malin
Head, NW coast of Ireland, in position 55 40N, 08 40W.   18 crew survived. 
According to Roger Jordan's book none were lost ???
