One of four sons, attended Wadham House School, Hale and Manchester Grammar
School.

He volunteered for the RN in June 1940 and H.M.S. Hood was his first (and
only as it turned out) ship.   His second eldest brother is a Lieutenant in
the RN.

Listed as S. Lawrence Kempton on Hale Cenotaph.

H.M.S. Hood was sunk at 0600hrs on the 24/05/41 in the Denmark Straight in
position 63.25N 31.55W, by the 15" guns of the German battleship "Bismark"
- there were only 3 survivors.   It was a battlecruiser, built between 1918
& 1920, it had a displacement of 42,100 tons and a complement of 1,350
personnel.

Commemorated on the family grave in Hale Cem.

His father, Sylvius had died 14/01/1937 aged 53 and his mother Marion died
30/08/1982 aged 78.
