Born during the March quarter in the Bolton R.D. - ref: 8c/386, the only
son of George & Alice Mort (nee Woodward).

1911 Census - 10 Markland Hill Lane, Bolton, Lancashire.    Son - aged: 4
months - born: Bolton.   Head of household - George Mort - Married - aged:
30 - occ: Textile Machineman - born: Leigh, Lancashire.   Also - Alice Mort
- Wife - aged: 29 - born: Bolton.   Plus 2 elder sisters.

Attended Seamon's Moss School.    Employed by the Fine Cotton Spinners &
Doublers Association, Manchester.     Played Badminton for the YMCA.

1939 National Registration.   George Mort (Snr) - Married - born on the
10th June 1880 - occ: Assurance Representative.   Alice Mort - Married -
born on the 11th September 1881 - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties.   There is
one redacted record at this address.

Spent 18 years with the Territorials.   Posted to France at the beginning
of the War and evacuated from Dunkirk.  He was then posted to North Africa,
serving with the 44th (Home Counties) Infantry Division, before going onto
the Italian Campaign and probably landing at Pacino, Sicily on the 10th
July 1943.   On the Italian mainland the 6th Battalion became part of the
56th Division, landing at Salerno.   The Battalion later took part in the
Gothic Line Battles and in the Battle of Gemmano Village when George was
killed.  This was a particularly fierce battle with many casualties on both
sides.
