Trafford

Born on the 28th December 1919, the birth being registered during the March
quarter 1920 in the Tendring R.D. - ref: 4a/1879, the son of Thomas W. &
Dorothy E. Jacobs (nee Webster).

Joined the Metro-Vicker's Company as a Probationary College Apprentice in
September 1938.    Joined the RNVR as a Sub-Lieutenant in August 1941.  
Discharged from H.M. Forces for health reasons and died in September 1942.

He served on HMS Trinidad, that sank itself on the 29 March 1942, killing
nine men.   A gyro fault on a torpedo fired from the ship caused it to move
in an arc and return to HMS Trinidad from which it had been fired.

Because he had been discharged from H.M. Forces, he is not commemorated by
the CWGC.

Death registered in the Surrey North Eastern R.D. - September quarter 1942
- ref: 2a/25 - aged: 22.

The church contains a memorial window to him and to his mother, who had
died in October 1941.  It includes a representation of HMS Trinidad, in
which Sub-Lt Jacobs served.   According to his obituary his fatal TB was
contracted on Russian convoy duty.   A tablet below the window commemorates
his father, who died in December 1943.

He is also commemorated in the chapel of his old school, Charterhouse, at
Godalming in Surrey.  School records give his date of death as 26th August
1942.
