He took off from RAF Oakington at 04.53 hours in a Stirling Mk1 Bomber No.
N6053 NG for a raid on Mazinggarbe.   They were hit by flak, which damaged
the starboard inner engine.   Soon afterwards, the bomber crashed near
Bethune, Pas de Calais.  Two of the seven man crew were taken prisoner, the
others were killed.

Pilot Officer R.D. Morley (pilot);  Sgt. W. Ross;  Sgt. R.H. Lomas-Smith; 
Flt. Sgt. W.G. Williams and Pilot Officer J. Bailie, were all killed.   
Sgt. G.S. Edwards RCAF and Sgt. L.N. Chappell were taken prisoner.

7 Sqn was a Pathfinder Sqn.
