Born during the September quarter 1923 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. -
ref: 8c/984, the son of William A.W. & Sarah H. Crookell (nee Foster).

1939 National Registration - 231 Talbot Road, Stretford.   William A.W.
Crookell - Married - born on the 24th September 1892 - occ: Coal & Coke
Merchant.    Sarah H. Crookell - Married - born on the 16th July 1893 -
occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties.   There were two redacted records at this
address.  These will be William's elder sister - Elsie Crookell (b.1921)
and William himself - the only two children of this family. 

Part of the 8th Armoured Brigade, he was killed on D-Day itself, the 6th
June 1944.  Landing in a M4 Sherman (DD - Duplex Drive amphibious) Tank,
landing on Gold Beach (King - Green Sector) at 07.20 hrs supporting the
50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division.
