Born during the March quarter 1910 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/858, the
son of John Edward & Elizabeth Annie Varah (nee Ellams).

His father's first wife, was a Maria Riley and in 1891 his father aged: 25
& Maria aged: 27, were residing at 280 Abbeydale Road, Ecclesall Bierlow,
Sheffield.    Maria died in the Chorlton R.D during the March quarter 1896
- aged: 32.

In 1901, William's father - John Edward Varah, along with his four
children, was listed as a widower at the house of John's brother-in-law -
Edward N. Adams and his wife at 9 Marriott Street, Withington, Manchester.

1911 Census - No trace of William, ANYWHERE, but his father John Edward
Varah is still a widower and, along with his four teenage children, is
still residing at the house of his brother-in-law at 60 Wilmslow Road
Withington Manchester, just three houses along from his future wife.

His father married his next door but two neighbour - Annie E. Ellams during
the September quarter 1912 in the Chorlton R.D. - ref: 8c/2055.    In 1911,
Annie was residing with her widowed father at 66 Wilmslow Road, Withington,
Manchester.  [Although now recorded as Annie E. Ellams, her birth
registration states Elizabeth Annie].

William married Doris Harrington during the September quarter 1937 in the
Manchester South R.D. - ref: 8d/625.

1939 National Registration - 8 Willoughby Avenue, Manchester.   William H.
Varah - Married - born: 20th February 1910 - occ: Manager - Outfitters.  
Doris Varah - Married - born: 30th December 1909 - occ: Shop Assistant -
Outfitters.   Jane E. Barlow - Married - born: 16th March 1906 - occ:
Unpaid Domestic Duties.   There is one redacted record for the Varahs and
one for the Barlows.

CWD Report No. 30.  Died as a result of a direct hit from an H.E. bomb at
Seymour Park, Old Trafford, from where his remains were recovered at 15.00
hrs on the 26th December 1940 and taken to the City Road Mortuary, Old
Trafford.    His remains were identified by a friend - Section Officer W.R.
Shaw A.F.S. to whom they were released for burial.    Employed in the
Millers Store, Manchester.

He was a manager at Millers Store, Manchester.   Killed at Seymour Park,
Stretford ??????

Manchester Cemetery records state that he lived at No. 1 Shrewsbury St, Old
Trafford, but his CWD record states that he resided at 44 Poplar Grove,
Brooklands, Sale.

Commemorated on the Manchester Fire Brigade Memorial and the "Nozzle"
Memorial and the Manchester City FB Memorial.

The "Nozzle" Memorial states that he died instantly together with Roy
Skelton at the Unitarian Church on Shrewsbury Road, Old Trafford.

CWGC - Fireman, A.F.S.; of 44 Poplar Grove, Brooklands. Died at Seymour
Park.

CWD No.30 states that he was killed by a direct hit of an HE bomb. Only a
foot and his breast were recovered.
