H.M.S. Valentine was damaged by dive bombers in an air attack on the
15/05/40 whilst providing anti-aircraft cover for Allied troops and beach
near Terneuzen, in the Schelde Estuary, in position 51.20N 03.49E.     It
was a 'V' & 'W' class escort destroyer, of which 26 were built between 1917
& 1918.  15 were converted for anti-aircraft use - to become the 'V' class
(Valentine) and 11 were converted for short range use - to become the 'W'
class.   The 'V' class had a displacement of 1,100 tons and a complement of
125 personnel.
