Originally named West Cawthorn built in 1919, its gross register tonnage
was 5,612, it was 427ft long, 54ft wide and could make 11.5 knots.   A
cargo ship, it was re-named Empire Bison and was on charter to the British
Ministry of War Transport.

North-west of the Hebrides, on the 01/11/40, travelling from Halifax Nova
Scotia to the Clyde, a straggler in convoy HX82, she was torpedoed by U-124
and sunk in position 59 30N 17 40W.   There were 4 survivors, but 31
crew/passengers were lost.
