Trafford

Born on the 3rd September 1893 the birth being registered during the
December quarter 1893 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/152, the only son of
Edward Arthur & Mary Arnold (nee Simpson).  Baptised at St. John's P.C. on
the 8th November 1893.

1901 Census - 20 Rostherne Street, Altrincham.  Son - aged: 7 - born:
Altrincham.   Head of household - Edward Arnold - Married - aged: 58 - occ:
Gardener (Domestic) - born: Peckham, London.   Also Mary Arnold - Wife -
aged: 30 - born: Newferry, Cheshire.   Plus 1 younger sister - Hilda
Arnold, and his paternal grandmother.

Member of the Presbyterian Sunday School.    His father died in 1902, aged:
37.

1911 Census - The Lowe Farm, Ashley, Cheshire.   Servant - aged: 19 - occ:
Goes with Milk Cart - born: Altrincham.   Head of household - Henry Lowe,
farmer aged: 73, plus his family and a number of young farm hands.    His
widowed mother - Mary Arnold, aged: 40 is residing at 15 Rostherne Street,
Altrincham at this time along with his younger sister.

When he was 19 years of age he emigrated to Canada working on a farm when
war broke out.

His Canadian attestation form, signed on the 22nd September 1915, at
Valcartier, Quebec, states that he was 22 years of age, 5 feet 7½ inches
in height, had a 34 to 36 inch chest (fully expanded).   His complexion
was: fair, his eyes: blue and his hair: fair.    The papers also state that
he was a Miner by trade and that he had never previously served in any
military force.

Religion - C of E.   He was unmarried and his mother - Mrs. Mary Arnold, 15
Rostherne Street, Altrincham, Cheshire, was listed as his next of kin.

He had been at the front for 2 years before he was killed.   Killed 3 days
prior to the big Canadian Battle for Vimy Ridge.

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Hale Cemetery which states
that he was with the 1st Canadian Trench Mortar Bn.

His father, Edward died 31/07/1902 aged 37 years and his mother, Mary died
23/05/1949 aged 80 years.

Listed in the Guardian Year Book - Roll of Honour for 1918.
