Born during the June quarter 1894 in the Hayfield R.D. - ref: 7b/842, the
son of Charles & Mary Ann Mortis (nee Arnold).

1901 Census - Wash Lane, Timperley.   Son - aged: 6 - born: Glossop,
Derbyshire.   Head of household - Charles Mortis - Married - aged:48 - occ:
Coal Merchant's Clerk - born: Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.  Also - Mary Ann
Mortis - Wife - aged: 42 - born: Warehorne, Kent.   Plus 1 elder brother
and 1 boarder.

His father Charles Mortis died in 1905 - aged; 52.

1911 Census - "Rose Bank", Wash Lane, Timperley.    Son - aged: 16 - occ:
Engineer's Fitter - born: Glossop, Derbyshire.   Head of household - Mary
Ann Mortis - Widow - aged: 52 - born: Warehorne, Kent.   Plus 1 elder
sister - Dora May Mortis, a 21 year old Clerk, born at New Romney, Kent..

Attended the Warehouseman & Clerks' School, Cheadle Hulme.     Employed by
Messrs. Vickers & Maxim, Barrow in Furness, (Gunmakers ?).   Later employed
by the Westinghouse Works, Trafford Park.

Enlisted in September 1914.   There is a National Archives record for him
under ADM 188/1021/1513 referring to Royal Naval Seamen ???  Perhaps he
first signed up for the Navy ???

Taken ill and hospitalised - he died in hospital.    Death reported in the
01/08/1916 edition of the Altrincham Guardian.

In December 1916, his sister - Dora May Mortis volunteered to serve as a
Pantry Maid in the British Red Cross Depot in the Heyesleigh Annex,
Timperley.   She gave her address as Rose Bank, Wash Lane, Timperley and
was only able to work on Saturdays and Sundays as she worked in town during
the week.   Dora May married Thomas H. Morgan in 1917, but continued to
work at Heyesleigh until the 28th February 1919.

Leonard was a nephew of John Arnold, Timperley.

Commemorated on the family gravestone in Christ Church Churchyard.
