Born on the 3rd January 1886, the second son of James Grimble Groves DL.,JP
& Anna Eva Groves.

Citation for the award of the DSO - London Gazette - 22 Jun 1916: -
"Commander Robert Marsland Groves,. R.N. (Wing Commander, R.N.A.S.).

In recognition of his services in command of a Wing of the Royal Naval Air
Service at Dunkirk. Commander Groves has by his personal skill as a pilot,
and also by his untiring zeal, effected a marked advancement in the general
standard of flying on active service.  He has on several occasions carried
out successful reconnaissances to Ostend under fire, and by his own example
has proved the utility and great importance of night flying."

Commemorated on the private family gravestone in St. Mary's Churchyard,
Rostherne, which states after "Air Commodore RAF" - "(Captain Royal
Navy)".

Killed on Service - Almaza, Egypt.   Left property of the value of
£35,977.

His father, James Grimble was the Deputy Lieutenant and Magistrate for
Cheshire and was born on 24/10/1864 and died 23/06/1914.   His mother Anna
Eva was born 22/12/1855 and died on 20/07/1938 and is buried at Mauchold on
the Isle of Man.
