Extra Information:
H.M.S. Raglan was an Abercrombie class monitor built in 1915. On the
morning of the 20/01/18 the German battle cruisers Goeben and Breslau
slipped out of the Dardanelles passing Cape Helles at 05.40hrs for a brief
raiding cruise in the Aegean Sea. British lookouts on Mavro Island
failed to spot the two ships and it was not until 07.20hrs that they were
first sighted by the destroyer Lizard which raised the alarm despite heavy
radio jamming by the two German ships. Almost at the same time Raglan
anchored in Kusu Bay also sighted the two German ships and closed in whilst
trying to raise steam. After driving off the Lizard, Breslau opened fire
on Raglan and with her fourth salvo destroyed the monitor's spotting top
killing the gunnery officer and wounding the Captain. Once Breslau had the
range of Raglan she began firing rapid salvos and was joined by Goeben.
One 11" shell from "Goeben" penetrated Raglan's barbette armour on the port
side starting a cordite fire and causing the evacuation of the turret.
The rapid fire by the German ships continued and a shell set off the 12 pdr
magazine after which "Raglan" sank by the bow at 08.15hrs close to the
shore in 40ft of water.
