Sale R.U.F.C. centenary book states that he was killed on operations.

Flying with 100 Sqn, he took off from RAF Grimsby at 23.25 hrs in a
Lancaster Mk 3 - No. ED976 - HW-S, on an operation to Düsseldorf.   The
a/c was shot down by a night fighter (Lt Werner Rapp, III./NJG1) and
crashed at 02.44 hrsTerwolde, Gelderland - 5 km north-west of Deventer,
Holland.

The other crew members, all but one were killed, were:- Sgt A.B. Magill
(pilot);  Sgt E.N. Cummings;  Sgt W.F. Bradley;  Sgt G. Glover;  Sgt J.W.
Lake (RCAF);  and Sgt L.A. Stephenson (RCAF)who was taken prisoner.
