Born at Shrewsbury on the 22nd April 1884, the birth being registered
during the September quarter 1884 in the Atchem R.D. - ref: 6a/683, the son
of William H. & Katherine Halliwell (nee Mason).   His parents were married
at Templemore, Ireland on the 10th December 1875.  His father was born at
Oldham, a colour sergeant in the British Army - a 13 years time served
soldier discharged at his own request on the 18th August 1891.

1891 Census - In Malta where his younger sister - Ellen was born.

1901 Census - 62 Tatton Street, Salford.    Son - aged: 16 - occ:
Merchant's Clerk - born: Shrewsbury, Shropshire.   Head of household -
William H. Halliwell - Married - aged: 47 - occ: Stationer's Stock Room
Labourerm- born: Oldham.   Also - Katherine Halliwell - Wife - aged: 45 -
born: Ireland.   Plus 5 siblings.

Married Mary Midgley at All Souls P.C. Weaste, Salford on the 14th July
1909.   They produced two children - Mary Muriel Halliwell (b. 10th April
1910 and Freda Halliwell (b. 3rd December 1916).

Joined the 3rd Battalion, Volunteer Brigade Lancashire Fusiliers in 1903.

1911 Census - 63 Whitelake Road, Flixton.   Head of household - Married -
aged: 26 - occ: Clerk (Produce Importing) - born: Shrewsbury, Shropshire.  
Aslo - Mary Halliwell - Wife - aged: 28 - born: Salford.    Plus their
daughter - Muriel Mary Halliwell - aged: 11 months - born: Urmston.

SDGW states that he was with the 17th Bn Manchester Rgt.

WO374/47694 - Residing at 63 Whitelake Avenue, Flixton, he enlisted  on the
9th December 1915.  He had previously served with the Lancashire Fusiliers
Volunteer Brigade - time expired in 1906.    Mobilised on the 3rd January
1916 and posted to the 28th Battalion, (2nd Artisits Rifles), London Rgt.  
He was 5 feet 11 1/2 inches in height.weighed 160 lb, had chest
measurements of 32 - 35 inches. Sent by them to their Officer Training
Corps at Hare Hill Camp, Romford, Essex on the 2nd February 1917.   
Discharged on obtaining a commission on the 28th August 1917 and appointed
as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Manchester Rgt on the 29th August 1917.   
Posted (in the field), from the 19th Manchester Rgt to the 17th on the 6th
February 1918.   On the 6th May 1918, he wrote to the War Office
complaining that his wife hade received a 'wire' stating that he had been
killed inaction on the 22nd April 1918 and that "this lamentable error" had
caused her much pain.

Posted to the 2nd Battalion, Manchester Rgt on the 1st June 1918.   Posted
to the 12th Battalion, Manchester Rgt on the 15th June 1918.   Granted
leave to the UK from the 24th August to the 7th September 1918.   
Appointed Acting Captain on the 3rd October 1918.

Letters of Administration were granted to his widow - Mary Halliwell on the
20th January 1919 at the Manchester Probate Registry.   His Estate was
valued at £156. 0. 0d.

In a statement dated 22nd January 1919, Private Fred Taylor of 166 Rochdale
Road, Oldham, stated that he had known the Captain quite well and was stood
beside him when he was hit by a rifle bullet just behind the ear and fell
dead instantly.  They were attacking at Neuvilly and had the Germans beat
at the time, with their machine gunners holding up their hands.  But a
party of Germans were in a farmhouse just behind them and it was they that
opened fire, killing the Captain.   Private Taylor stated that he had been
wounded in the arm and was carried away.

Listed as a Captain on St. Michael's Memorial, but the CWGC list him as a
2nd Lieutenant.
